Child Obesity A growing concern | Nikunj Joshi

We often love to discuss topics related to English education, but today I would like to shed light on one of the most important health issues — Child Obesity.

Two Major Sides of Child Health Issues
Malnutrition
Child Obesity
While many children around the world still suffer from malnutrition, fortunately, governments, world organizations, and NGOs are making strong efforts to combat it.  However, our attention must now also turn toward the rising problem of child obesity.
Global Concern
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), child obesity has increased ten times worldwide in the last four decades.  It is no longer limited to developed nations — it is now spreading rapidly in developing countries as well.
In India, reports show that 14% to 20% of school children in urban areas are overweight or obese.

Causes of Child Obesity
Unhealthy Eating Habits
Consumption of junk food
Fast food culture
Sugary drinks
Packet or processed foods

Lack of Physical Activity
Too much screen time
Excessive gaming on TV or mobile
Avoiding outdoor play

Psychological Factors
Stress due to academic pressure
Loneliness in nuclear families
Lack of quality time with parents
Lack of Safe Outdoor Spaces

In many urban areas, children have no safe places to play outside

 What Can We Do?
Eat Healthy Food
Encourage home-cooked meals
Include fruits, vegetables, and whole grains in daily diet
Regular Physical Activity
At least 60 minutes of exercise daily
Activities like cycling, walking, or yoga

Role of Schools
Focus on sports and physical education
Provide nutritious meals in school canteens
 Why It Matters
Child obesity affects not only the present but also the future health of children.
It increases the risk of:
Cardiovascular diseases
Type-2 diabetes
Certain types of cancer

Final Message
Let’s be mindful of our children’s health.
Encourage healthy habits, active lifestyles, and emotional well-being.
Be happy, be healthy — and take care of your little world!
