Blending words | Unlocking Creativity




English is an interesting language. The most specific characteristic of this global language is, it is spoken worldwide. Therefore this language has become very rich. Moreover it is enriching day by day. It has adopted many words from different languages spoken in all the corners of the world as well as this language goes through many word formation processes. One of the wonderful processes is blending. Let’s understand ‘blending’ with few examples.

BLENDING:

Blending is one of the many ways new words are made in English. It refers to joining the beginning of one word and the end of another to make a new word with a new meaning. Smog, from smoke and fog, and brunch, from breakfast and lunch, are examples of blends.

"The use of blending word is first appeard  the book “Through the Looking-Glass,” by Author Lewis Carrollin, published in 1871.

“You see it’s like a portmanteau—there are two meanings packed up into one word.”

Breakfast + Lunch = Brunch

Bank + Smash= Bash

Smoke + fog= Smog

Situation + Comedy = Sitcom
